Toni Porter, district sales manager, Greater Manchester

I graduated from the University of Chester in 2015 and joined the Heidelberg Materials graduate programme the following year. The rotational structure of the programme gave me exposure to different areas of the business, allowing me to spend time across multiple business lines. This was a huge opportunity to build a broad understanding of the company, learn quickly, and develop a strong network early in my career. After completing the programme in 18 months, I progressed into a District Sales Manager role within Heidelberg Materials Concrete, covering Greater Manchester.

Over the past 10 years, I have continued to develop my career within the business, working as a Territory Sales Manager in concrete across a range of geographical areas, with a strong focus on business development. I am now a Field Sales Manager, with commercial responsibility for asphalt plants across the North.
Construction wasn’t an industry I originally expected to work in, but it’s one I’ve found incredibly rewarding. As a naturally people-focused person, I’ve really valued the opportunity to build relationships and work with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. No two days are the same, and that variety is a big part of what keeps the role engaging.

The industry has played a significant role in my personal and professional development. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me grow in confidence, and challenged me to keep learning. Every day brings something new — whether that’s navigating complex commercial decisions, developing new business opportunities, or working closely with customers and colleagues to deliver results.
Throughout my career, I’ve also been fortunate to be supported by a number of inspiring leaders and colleagues, whose guidance and encouragement have helped shape my journey.

Looking back, the experience has been both challenging and exciting, and it’s given me a career path I hadn’t initially anticipated but genuinely enjoy. It’s an industry full of opportunity, and I would strongly encourage others — particularly women, who may not have previously considered a career in construction — to explore graduate opportunities and see what it has to offer.

I’m excited to continue developing my career within Heidelberg Materials and look forward to seeing what the future holds.
